How to get files from camcorder to computer?

How to Get videos off my camcorder? (Canon Vixia HF20)?

  • i have a Canon Vixia HF20 HD camcorder with several video files on it. When i connect it to the computer with USB HDMI cable it shows files that are .MTS which my computer can't handle. How can i get the files from the camcorder to my computer and them modify them so i can edit them?

  • Answer:

Part 1: You can have a USB cable. You can have a HDMI cable. There is no "USB HDMI cable". Part 2: You need a video editor and computer hardware that can deal with the AVCHD compressed MTS files. With these, you can edit the video. The current versions of Sony Vegas and dobe Premiere work fine. If this hardware and software is not do-able, the you need to transcode the MTS files to a file type that your computer hardware and video editor will deal with. Since you provide no information on these, it is impossible to know what you have to work with. MPEG StreamClip from www.squared5.com is a good transcoder - there are many others. If you are planning to edit with MovieMaker, it likes WMV files.
