How to upload videos to computer using a handycam?

  If it is digital tape - miniDV or digital8 - then connect the camcorder's DV port (not USB) to the computer's firewire port (not USB) with a firewire cable (not USB). Put the camcorder in Play mode; launch the video editor in the computer and Import or Capture the video. The computer will control the camcorder over the fiewire connection. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things do not work. If it is analog tape (Beta, Hi8, VHS, VHS-C, etc) , connect the camcorder's AV cable to the camcorder's AV port and an "analog/digital converter" - like those from Canopus or Elgato - The A/D converter connects to the computer using USB or firewire. It depends which A/D converter you get. Put the camcorder into Play mode. Press play on the camcorder, click Import or capture on the video editing application. There will be no camcorder control from the computer - you need to control the camcorder.
