How do you compress a home video?

How do I compress the video taken from my MiniDV camera?

  • I have a Sony DCR-HC20E and I am now taking the video from it via FireWire cable and using Windows Live Movie Maker, but the whole tape would take 12GB of my HDD. I want to compress the video so I can burn it on a DVD, but still keep good video quality. What software and codec can I use to compress my video?

  • Answer:

The easy answer is to use MovieMaker and DVD Maker. With the video project open, under File, select Save As or Export and follow the prompts for a high quality AVI. Then you will use DVD Maker to render that video to a VOB file and it will burn it to a DVD - which can be used in a regular DVD player. Don't worry too much about the current size - you want to be uncompressed when editing. Compression at the last step - in this case, when rendering to a VOB file - is the right thing to do.
