What HD camcorders are compatible with Mac?

Best HD Camcorder for my Mac?

  • I have an iMac 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM running Mac OS X 10.5.8. I'm looking into purchasing a new digital camcorder, but I don't know which software would be best for editing video produced by these new HD camcorders. Up to now, using my old miniDV camcorder, I've been using iMovie HD - which I LOVE. But iMovie only recognizes firewire, and the new camcorders don't use firewire. My iMac actually came with a newer version of iMovie which might work - but the program's movie-editing abilities absolutely suck compared to the old iMovie HD. I'm open to new software suggestions that will work on this iMac for the new digital HD camcorders, but I need something that idiots can use. I have Final Cut Express, but I must be stupid or something cause I can't figure it out for the life of me. I love video editing and stuff, but the fact that these newer camcorders all use their own proprietary formats is making my life miserable. What I'm looking for in an editing software: -The ability to easily divide a single clip into two -The ability to easily drag audio clips to a specific section of the timeline -Imports through USB 2.0 or recognizes the formats of HD camcorder files Any help would me much appreciated! Thanks!!

  • Answer:

Samsung HMX-H304 is a fine little camcorder for the money. It would be nice if there was a 'video in' jack, but then it would probably be two hundred dollars more...very easy to use with my Mac.

if your looking for a good camcorder that shoots HD and is easy to use, try a sony HDR-CX160 i highly recommend them, they are good quality, have great features and are cheep. when it comes to video editing on your iMac i recommend upgrading to Final Cut Pro X, i have used previous versions of final cut and i have to agree they can be confusing, final cut x has many features similar to iMovie and even looks like it. it took me about a week to learn how to use it. Now if you don't have $300 to spend go try Avid Media Composer 5.5, it also is a good editing software, and they have a 30 day free trail version (although I'm not sure if they have one for mac) and it might look a bit confusing but thats nothing a few youtube tutorials can't fix. if you have any questions about final cut x or avid media composer 5.5, message me ill be happy to help (now remember Final Cut Pro X, had a huge change from its previous version, so i won't be much help in any older versions)
