I am 99% sure you will find its a problem with the Heads or the tape carriage rollers. after that length of time dust and dirt will have accumulated on them. First try a head cleaner, and see if that makes a difference, if it does then maybe use it again, but no more than three times and no more than 10 seconds at a time. They are only good for a small amount of dirt if its worse than that then you will have to go to step 2, this is a little more involved, but it will give a much better result. Do it by hand. this link will show/tell you how to clean a VCR but the process is the same, its just that the parts are smaller. http://hometheater.about.com/cs/vcrs/ht/vcrheadcleaing.htm there are some pictures here http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/165 found one for a camcorder http://www.ehow.com/how_5209068_clean-mm-video-head.html Good luck if all else fails than you will have to get it looked at RR

since it worked once, my guess is it is a broken or worn rubber belt that started slipping after the first stretch. the warning essentially means that the take up reel is not turning. there is no similar warning for "dirty heads"
