How do I transfer an old camcorder video to pc?

How do I transfer Hi8 video from my camcorder to my PC if the model I have doesn't have a USB connection?

  • The Camcorder I have is a Samsung SCL901. It does have a S-video out, if that helps! Any help with this would be a great help. I have a lot of video I'd like to transfer to my PC and use an editing program to do work on. Any advice on affordable and easy to use software for that sort of thing would also be appreciated. Thanks!!

    If you have a TV card on your computer, you should be able to use the RCA jacks, if the camcorder has them, if not, some of the newer more expensive TV cards have a S-video on them. You can purchase a device called Dazzle. This connects the camcorder (RCA or S-video) to the computer (USB). IT is on sale at Best Buy or Circuit City this week for 50 dollars. This is the easiest bet. It also comes with an editing software called Studio. It is very good at editing your movies and then burning them into different formats.

Greetings, There are several ways to transfer video to your PC using the HI8 tapes. The first way would be to get a Analog capture card or device. Search for one on google or go to B&Hphoto.com. When you fine one that you like, you can read a review about it at the link below. Another way is to get a Digital8 Camcorder with the digital conversion. For example, the Sony DCR-TRV330 and the DCR-TRV 340 (that I own) have the ability to up convert your Hi8 tape in camera and export with Firewire. But be careful - I'm not sure that they all have this feature. So, if you can find a cheap D8 that does that, I would go in that direction. If not, a Firewire external Analog-to-DV converter is a great way to go. Hope that helps... Jeff

You will need a device like the one I have http://www.adstech.com/products/API-557-EFS/intro/api557_intro.asp?pid=API-557-EFS or a video capture card, DVD writer, video editor and DVD authoring & burning software. Visit the sites of Nero, Ulead, Pinnacle System and Cyberlink. They have great video editing and DVD burning softwares.
