How do i get my digital pictures onto my computer using a sd card?

i put my card into a slot into the right card slot on my computer but nothing happens and i can't find my pictures any where

What size is the card? Some of the newer 8gb+ cards are Micro SDHC instead of just plain Micro SD. I had to buy a special adapter to get my sdhc card to work.
