What camcorder should I buy?
-
I'm thinking about getting a video camera (or camcorder, which ever you prefer) and I don't know what I should get. I've got a fairly limited price range, but I want something good quality. Waterproof is a bonus but not a must. Suggestions???

Answer:
You would need to spend in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that can compete with the video Quality of a $300 MiniDV tape camcorder. Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. First - fuzzy, blurry, out of focus areas around the edges of people in HD videos. Second - If someone moves while the HD camcorder is recording, screen ghosts and artifacts following the movement are left on the recording media, thus to the video. Third - they limit your record time. That could seriously impair some people when the ability to tape runs out before the event is done. With MiniDV tape, you can keep a spare tape in your pocket and in a couple minutes your good for another 90 minutes You can get a Canon ZR930 for about $300 or a ZR 960 for $250. Both use MiniDV tape, both have Mic jacks, both shoot the best video going in consumer level camcorders.

Sanyo VPC-WH1 can definitely fit in a jacket pocket (not a shirt pocket) and the battery lasts a couple of hours which is great. Wasn't impressed with the stabilization and I'll definitely be using it on a tripod or braced against something solid. It worked perfectly underwater where I was in macro mode and the detail was excellent. The good: * Waterproof! * Excellent battery life (almost enough to fill 16GB card with 720p video). * I guess the face chaser thingy kind of works. * Umm, it's... small? Oh oh, it turns on relatively quickly. It's no DSLR, but it's not bad.
