What is a good digital video camcorder that is under $250?

Buying a digital camcorder advice?

  • I want to buy a digital camcorder, but I have absolutely no idea what's going on with all the different options out there. I was hoping to get something under $250, or at least close to that. Important features would be ease of transfer to DVD, decent battery life, and of course decent quality video. It'll be mainly used to video tape the new baby girl. Any suggestions?? Also, does anyone have experience with a HDD (hard disk drive) camcorder? How difficult is it to convert the video from a HDD camcorder to DVD? Does it require special software? I'm pretty good with computers, but I don't want to have to go through a complicated, time-consuming process every time. Like I know to convert an hour-long VHS tape to DVD, it takes an hour. Ugh. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Turnba - I would not bother with a HDD camera now - the SD memory card cameras are cheaper and more reliable. Pretty much all of them will include software for DVD burning: http://www.amazon.com/JVC-Everio-MS120-Flash-Camcorder/dp/B001OMH1HI/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1267815054&sr=1-20

I have a flash drive camcorder and I really love how easy it is to download. I can either use a card reader and copy/paste all videos in the matter of seconds, you can also use the supplied software to download via a USB cord. Still very quickly. I have used pinnacle studio 11 for some time now and it works well, I do not have to convert the video, just drag and drop to the timeline, add music, transitions and then burn to a dvd. I have the canon FS100 and I like it, but it doesn't take good stills and low light could be better.
