Tips for new camcorder?

Any tips for best camcorder??

  • I have a big birthday coming up and asked for a camcorder. However, although we have a nice Sony photo camera, we haven´t got a clue about camcorders. Please advise what things to look for and which makes/models to go for in the mid-range price class.... I will mostly use it to film the family, but probably will want to be able to edit easily as well, so the additional software is important too.....

  • Answer:

Buy a Sony Digital 8 camcorder. DO NOT buy the DVD camcorder......picture quality is not as good, record time is less and they are typically more expensive. The Sony offers stillshot, a pretty good night vision (on some models) and it generally has a Leica lens (Leica makes some of the worlds best photography lenses)

Unless you are willing to spend over a thousand dollars, for camcorders like the Sony HDR-SR1 or HDR-UX1, any DVD or hard-drive based camcorders in your price range will be sorely lacking in quality and performance. Going with an HD (HDV) device like the Canon HV-10, although there is no debating their superior quality, will also cost you around a thousand bucks. I would recommend you go for a Mini-DV camcorder from Sony, Canon or Panasonic. I'm not sure what your definition of "mid-range price" is, but the Panasonic PV-GS300, available at B & H (bhphotovideo.com) for $499 is a great choice especially if you're going to shoot in automatic mode.

seriously, they are all so similar these days. choose a brand name that you trust (jvc panasonic sony etc) and buy from a store that gives you warranty and you will be fine. choose the one that you can afford, which is the smallest. check for stabilisers (anti-shake) which is a really handy feature. dont worry about digital zoom, it means nothing really, optical zoom is the thing to consider, which is actual zoom as opposed to digital which is just zooming in but same pixel quality. good luck

Go High Definition if you can aford it, thats what everyone will eventually swing to, so you might aswell start now. There are many great brands out there: Panasonic, Sony, JVC, Canon etc, and many different recording types: DVD, Mini Digital Video Tape, Hard Disc etc, and also many different formats: CCD (charged coupled device), 3CCD, HD etc. Have a look around for the best type of camera that will suite your needs would be the best option.

Hi Digital8 is less popular now and is being phased out by Sony. It has to be a MiniDV and there are loads to choose and with prices from £150 to £1000+ you have got to do the leg work and look in your local store, find what you like then get a better price on the Internet. This really is the best advice I can offer.
