Why will my Hitachi BX35A video camera let me record to a disk but not to a memory card?

It let's me records when it's set to disk, but it only lets me take photos when I have it set to memory card. When I try to record it says, "Can not record." Help please.

this is a 4 year old model, SD cards were not generally available to store data at 6 mbps then. this camera does not record video to the SD card.
