My friend wants to sell his DCR-SR47 Sony video camera. Should I buy it?

This is a discontinued model, so your friend probably bought it at a close-out sale. it was in the $500 - $600 class when new, he probably got it for $400 and i would think that $250 - $300 would be fair. Be sure that you get the Sony program CDs for your PC as you need that to manage the cameras HDD for downloads and deleting old files. If you use a MAC then don't get this, Sony does not support Apple computer products. It is a solid performing mid-range camera. Its pluses include MPEG2 encoding which puts it at the top of the class for standard definition memory card codecs, just a notch below miniDV which is the undisputed king. It is hybrid, meaning it can record video to both the HDD and the memory card. memory card shooting is convenient, but HDD recording will have the best quality when you need it. it has some features you will never use like 60x zoom, and others that make it a joy to shoot with. Sony rates it as "entry level" but its quality is far beyond that.
