Is a Flip really better than an older SD camcorder?

Can hd footage i filmed on a sony hd camcorder be viewed on a older sd camcorder?

  • I have a few mini dv tapes i've been going through to try and organize what was on each on the tapes. I borrowed a friends newer sony hd camcorder to record a concert. Long story short; tapes got mixed around and only recently was i able to view what i had shot with the hd camcorder. I tried using a older standard definition camcorder to view the tapes only to find that the tapes were blank. Is it possible the standard definition camcorder can't recognize the HD footage (no time code, no image, no sound)?

  • Answer:

If the DV/HDV camcorder recorded HDV format video, the standard def camcorder will not be able to interpret the HDV data on the miniDV tape. You need to use another HDV camcorder - or a miniDV deck that can deal with HDV format video on that miniDV tape. The tapes are not "blank". The HDV video is there. The HDV format video cannot be read by the standard def electronics in the older camcorder.
