Do video cameras need tape to record video?

i wanted to find my dads video camera so i can start filming bmx videos. i have a JVC GR-DV800u digital video camera. i have a 2 gb memory card and everytime i try to record video it says no tape. i thought that this was only for tape recorders but i dont know. is this a setting on the camera or somthing? please help!

wow, there are 2 kinds of tape recorders. analog (like VHS) and digital. the GR-DV800 uses digital tape aka miniDV. you need to get a miniDV tape (sometimes marked as DVC digital video cassette), should cost less than $5 usd. while you are at it, look around for the cable to connect to the computer ieee1394 port. it came with the camera, but getting a replacement is easy.
