How to check the battery life on a flip camcorder?

So I went to Best Buy and got a Flip Ultra HD camcorder yesterday but it was used. And after making some things on it I could see the battery life. I just got a new one today after trading it because the old one was CRAP. I wanna check the battery life on it because I've been charging it for an hour. But I just put in the batteries after an hour of trying to charge it without the batteries (stupid of me...I'm mentally blonde). So how do I check it? Or do I not charge it until my battery is actually low and tells me? So should I stop charging it and just leave it or continue to be safe?
Answer:

New camcorder, new batteries, charge them at least 18 to 24 before using, otherwise they will be trash in no time flat.
