How do I transfer video from camcorder to laptop?

What type of cable, do I need to transfer video from my sony mini dv camcorder to my toshiba satellite laptop?

  • My camcorder is the DCR-HC 62 and came with a USB cable which does not transfer video, although the manual states that USB 2.0 would work, I guess that the cable is a normal USB. Is there a physical difference? My laptop is the A305d S6848 and has a mini firewire port so I'd like to know if the 4 pin to 4 pin would work or the 4 pin to 6 pin and why? Thank you in advance for your help.

    The firewire 400 cable should be 4pin to 4pin. USB doesn't work on Vista. - Almost all miniDV vcams have 4pin ports. Firewire is preferable to USB because it is faster. I should also warn you that you need to have some kind of video editing software, even if it is Windows Movie Maker or another consumer level one, in order to transfer the video. Also, check to make sure you have appropriate drivers and check what ports are on your camera. You shouldn't have any trouble if you follow this. As far as type of firewire cable, you need to check port specifications to know the right type.

The DV terminal on ALL miniDV tape camcorders is ALWAYS 4 pin. The firewire port on your computer can be either 4-pin or 6-pin. This is not USB. Firewire and USB are different. Firewire, IEEE1394, i.LINK and DV are all the same thing... and they are not firewire. According to the link below, it has a "mini firewire" port. You will need a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable.
