Gray lines on video playback?

I have a JVC video camera and it has been sitting idel for some time but now i get green lines when i playback?

  • Whenever I play back an old cassette that was recorded with the camera, it comes up with big green lines across the camera screen and the tv when connected. Is it a case of dust inside. Or I was thinking that it is something to do with the whole long play short play thing. Not sure, any ideas would be good!! Thanks and oh its a JVC GR-D24EK

  • Answer:

You're heads are dirty. You need to clean them. When I worked in the shop we would use a chemical called MEK ( methyl ethyl ketone) and a plain white piece of copy paper. Get the paper moist (not wet) and hold it at the bottom of the big silver drum (that holds your heads. they are the little tiny rectangles at the bottom of the drum. Then just turn the drum 5-10 times, change paper and repeat. You should see the dirt come off of the heads as black smudges on the paper. If you are not comfortable with this task. Take it to a shop and have it cleaned.

Before messing around with cloth and jabbing it into your deck just try using a Head cleaner for 10 seconds or less. They usually run for about $10. If that doesn't work which it likely will you'll have to have the head cleaned professionally which you can try doing yourself at some risk.
