Canon 500D Video Recording Limit?

Recording takes up too much mb space, how can I change this?

  • I'm trying to figure out how or if I can change how my Canon Power Shot A570IS is recording video. I want to record some stuff that's 10-15 minutes long and be able to upload it onto myspace. But so far in trial and lots of error, i've noticed my recordings are using a lot of mb space. Myspace has a 100MB limit. I recorded a 42 second video and it was nearly 52MB of space. I recorded things on my other camera that's integrated into my pc, like a 6 plus minute video that only took just over 25MB of space. Does anyone know how I can change it so that my Canon camera can record decent video without using all that mb space?

  • Answer:

All camera's will produce a gigantic filesize video because it takes a picture for every second of a scene. Say a 500 x 500 jpeg image is like 100 kilobytes, then imagine your camera taking 60 of those frames and putting them in together. Quite big. I'd suggest programs such as DivX converter to compress the files and make them smaller. Or Google "Video compressor programs".

You may not know it, but most would envy your choice of digicam. A570 IS records in AVI (Motion JPEG) format @ 640x480 resolution, meaning good quality, which is best for video editing instead of the highly compressed formats like mpeg4 where you have a smaller file at the expense of video quality. Of course, this entails bigger resources: higher capacity & high speed memory cards & hhd's, faster pc's, better video editing app for not compromising quality. In video editing, it is best to have the source file uncompressed as much as possible, then later, the edited movie is compressed accdg. to reqmnt. like youTube. As mentioned above, if required, just convert your avi file to nearest requirement (100mb?). Try Super or Prism video converters free. 50% of above resolution or mov, mpg, wmv
