Is a Canon Vixia HV30 a good camcorder?

I have a canon vixia hv30 camcorder. Is there a way to get video onto my laptop without firewire?

  • It has a USB cord, but I'm almost positive that's only for the picture taking portion of the camera. ):

  • Answer:

No. The Canon Vixia HV30 is miniDV tape based. Connect a firewire (not USB) cable to the camcorder's DV port (not USB) to the computer's firewire port (not USB). USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapters will not work. You are correct - USB is used only for transferring still images from the memory card. Too bad you did not tell us which computer you are using... maybe there is a PCMCIA, ExpressCard or PCMCIA expansion slot so you can add a firewire port...

I have bee using a camcorder assistant program called Aunsoft Final Mate to backup my camcorder footages onto my PC. I first start Aunsoft Final Mate and then connect my camcorder (a Panasonic TM900) to PC using the USB cable. A camcorder wizard in the Final Mate program will launch automatically and ask me whether I want to backup the camcorder video files onto computer or import into Aunsoft Final Mate for editing. I am not sure if this program also works for you. You may have a try if you like.
