How do i transfer video from a Mini DV tape to my Computer?

Mini DV Camcorder question?

  • I have a used Canon GL1 mini DV camcorder I have mini DV's for it, a remote, charger and lens hood....that's about it I'm hoping someone can assist me in my complete ignorance about this I'm looking to make a home movie on Mac iMovie.....how do I transfer to my computer? Is it as simple as finding the appropriate cable, and plugging it into my computer? Will all of the video on each of the 60 min tape transfer over like an SD card does? Do you know if it's compatible with iMovie? Other question, are the DV tapes like VHS tapes where you can use them over again? thanks so much! =)

  • Answer:

    1. Apple wrote the computer specifications for miniDV, so yes it is compatible with iMovie. 2. You will need a firewire cable, four pin on the camera end and what ever on the computer side 3. iMovie will control the transfer, you can copy the entire tape or select clips 4. miniDV tapes can be recorded over, although personally i don't. at $2 tape, i keep them for archive purposes. miniDV also has the record prevent tab like VHS, it is a slider. 5. the GL is a top quality camera in spite of its age, you should shop for a replacement battery as they don't last longer than about 5 years in normal use.
