What is the best way to store HD camcorder video online?
-
By it's nature HD video consumes a lot of storage space and I'm finding that the quality video I want is producing files larger than 4GB so DVD for storage won't work. I don't wan tot compress the video so I'm interested in seeing if there is a website that would let you load your video file up to the cloud and if there is a service that will burn it to BluRay for a fee. I was hoping snapfish would do that but it seems like they don't. Does anyone know of a service that does this?

Answer:
Single layer DVDs can store up to 4.7 gig of data. Double layer DVDs can store up to 8.5 gig of data. Blu Ray blank discs start at about 25 gig of data and go up from there. This is why high definition video features you buy are on Blu Ray. This means you need to add a Blur Ray Burner to your computer (I like LaCie's equipment - there are others). The burners are inexpensive - the blank discs are expensive, but can hold lots of data if you plan well. Using a multiple hard disc drive RAID1 system (commonly found in half decent Network Attached Storage devices - Buffalo, Netgear, D-Link, Sans Digital, Iomega, and many others make them) is probably the best option. Using online storage for this is an odd request/expectation - uploading 10s or 100s of gigabytes of data will consume lots of bandwidth and probably take lots of time to upload. And someone needs to pay for the hard drives that the data gets loaded to... That's funny that you "don't want to compress the video" - Assuming you are using a camcorder that records to flash memory, hard disc drive or even miniDV tape, the video is already compressed. This is true for AVCHD compressed MTS files and HDV compressed onto miniDV tape - the HDV format is less compression then MTS, but all have some sort of compression applied... So... yet another reason miniDV tape continues to be the affordable, best, option for high definition video capture and long-term archival... the inexpensive tape is the storage media when it is not re-used.

There is no "free" service I know of that will handle that amount of data. even if it did its going to be a total pain to upload files of that size, uploading is no where near as fast as downloading. you can get external drive for almost nothing today, have a a look on Amazon, a 1Tb drive $100 ish. Putting your video onto blu-ray for nothing, thats not going to happen, I know disks are getting cheaper but not that cheap. RR
