How to connect HD Camcorder (HV20) to laptop with HDMI output!?

  • so i have this laptop with an HDMI output. and i have a camcorder with an HDMI output. so is there a way to get those two to go together. also im pretty aware im going to need a program so what kind of program would be needed for this???

    The Canon HV20 is a miniDV tape based camcorder that captures HDV, high definition video, to miniDV tape. Connect the camcorder's DV port (not USB) to the computer's firewire port (not USB) using a firewire cable (not USB). Launch the HDV-capable video editor (Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, iMovie, FinalCut), put the camcorder in Play mode... and import/Capture the video. If your computer has no firewire port and cannot handle it, then you need a HDMI input capability. Black Magic makes cards for that. Chances are 99.99% that the existing HDMI port on the computer is out only and can never be made to be in-bound. Since you did not tell us which computer, there is no way for us to know for sure. You cannot copy the HDV video from the tape to the memory card in the camcorder. USB won't work (that is for stills on the memory card only). USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things will not work. Another option is to use the camcorder's analog AV port/cable and a capture card/analog/digital converter. Then the video won't be high definition, but it will be wide-screen standard definition.

The camera has HDMI output and the laptop has HDMI output. The two won't connect because they are both outputs. If the laptop's HDMI could input, then sure. You CAN, however, connect the camera to a TV and show your pictures. TVs have HDMI input. If you want the camera to connect to your laptop, then you'll have to use USB or some other port on your laptop. I depends on what you want to do with your camera, though. If your filming live, then I wouldn't know what to do. If you want to import pictures, then a USB cable or SD card would be needed. You may want to be more specific of what exactly you want to do.
