How to make a road trip video with a hand held video camera?

  • I am going on a 25-30 hour road trip and have a little samsung video camera and I was wondering what size sd card / programs I would need. I will be able to load the sd card into a computer and clear the sd card every 8-10 hours. Ive seen long running videos of a non moving camera just on the dash of the car or in the back seat that cover a full road trip, how are these made? It doesnt have to be amazing quality, id do it in 480 or 720. What I need to know: - SD card size (how long of a video can a 32 gig sd card hold? 16 gig?) - Any programs for my laptop that will help make this? I will be make the video from the 25+ hour road trip in to a 10-15 min video time lapse.

    1st) Video length that can be held will depend on video compression and bit rate, not just resolution. A very general guess would be 8 Hours at 720p on a 32GB SD Card. If you are using a Mac, use the iMovie software and just decrease the total time of your video to the desired amount (it speeds everything up). If you are using a Windows PC the same can be achieved through Windows Movie Maker, but a lot of people complain about the program being buggy.
