On camcorders, is there a maximum for optical zoom?

they always have some purchase guidelines for buying camcorders with the right zoom features. if i want to record something from about across a football field, how much zoom should i get? & is a disk better to record on than a tape?

The most zoom I've seen on a consumer level cam is 30x but as far as features go it might be over-rated. Better to get a 3CCD lens with 10x zoom than 30x zoom and a 1CCD lens. Mini-dv has the best quality of the choices for media.
