  • Answer:

Since you did not tell us the model number of the Sony Handycam and you did not tell us anything about your computer, there is no way for anyone to provide you with specific, useful, information. Generally, "Handycam" is Sony's brand name for ALL their consumer camcorders whether they record to analog or digital tape, hard disc drive, flash memory or DVD. Getting video from an analog camcorder (VHS, VHS-C, Beta, 8mm, Hi8, etc.) into a computer means using a "analog/digital converter". Getting video from a standard definition digital tape camcorder (miniDV, Digital8) into a computer means connecting a firewire cable (not USB) to the camcorder's DV port (not USB) and the computer's firewire port (not USB) - with the camcorder in Play or Play/Edit or VCR mode, launch a video editor and Import or Capture the video. The import process might be different if the camcorder captured high definition video. Getting video from a DVD based camcorder means finalizing the disc in the camcorder (read the manual for instructions to do this), take the disc out of the camcorder, inserting the disc to the computer's DVD drive and ripping the video with a ripper like HandBrake www.handbrake.fr. Video quality will be poor. Save the converted video to WMV format for editing in a Windows computer) MovieMaker); MOV format for editing in a Mac (iMovie). Getting video from a hard disc drive or flash memory camcorder means connecting the camcorder to the computer with a USB cable. Sometimes you can import the MPG or MOD files to the video editor; sometimes you need to copy the files to the computer then transcode them to a format the video editor can deal with. High definition AVCHD/MTS or TOD files might be treated differently if the camcorder captured high definition video.
