Will My Samsung Mini DV Camcorder Support a USB Signal from its Firewire Port?
-
I have a Samsung Mini DV camcorder which only connects to a computer via its Firewire (IEEE) port. I recently bought a new laptop which only has USB ports. Will my camcorder support a USB signal via its firewire port if I purchase a USB to Firewire convertor cable? If this will not work, I fear my camcorder will be rendered useless! Please advise.

Answer:
No and firewire to USB adapters do not work. Check to see if your laptop has an empty bay and then buy a firewire card for it.

buying a Firewire to USB cord is a waste of cash, nothing less, USB speeds are no where near fast enough for DV footage transfers. You can get an adapter that plugs into your computers expansion port See this http://www.nextag.com/Startech-EC13941A1B-2-Port-641698686/prices-html?nxtg=66080a280513-110B35F8E086FA7D for details and to give you an idea of what you do need.

Just double-check - does that computer have: -USB 2, or USB 3 ports? There's a difference, and it might affect the answer. USB2 definitely won't do anything useful with FireWire - and converters will NOT work for this purpose. As for USB3, I currently don't know of any USB3 devices that allow for all the features that FireWire has, but a little research might turn something up. I really don't know. -Any kind of expansion card port - PCMCIA? ExpressCard? If so, there's your answer. Purchase and install a FireWire card. It will work. -A Thunderbolt port? If I recall correctly, only new Macs have this so far, but there might be another laptop model or two mixed in there that has it. Again, I'd need to do more research to see if there are any useful Thunderbolt devices that will work for you, IF you have that port. You'd be able to get some kind of Thunderbolt converter or adapter that would definitely support FireWire. If you have ONLY USB2, and there's no other expansion of any kind possible, you can use a device like the Dazzle by Pinnacle/Avid. You do take a quality hit, and you won't be able to control the camera using your computer as you would with FireWire, and you won't get the tape timecode transferred to the computer as you would with FireWire, but it's better than nothing at all. The other more expensive alternatives would be to get a stand-alone unit that records video via FireWire, and can connect to your computer via USB - such as a "FireStore" recorder. Whether it's worth it is up to you, but it will support all functionality of FireWire - full quality, timecode, etc.
