Where to connect a usb in a camcorder?

I have a USB connection for my camcorder but when i connect it after videoing something it says it can't find

  • I am using windows movie maker, i have installed my camcorder using the installshield wizard and with the disk it provided. Now i am connected, how do i get my videos from it to windows movie maker using a USB connection. It just says there is no camcorder or video recording device connected???!!!

  • Answer:

USB is not a good interface for capturing video to a pc - you tend to get the audio and video out of synch and as you've found, most capture apps don't support USB anyway. Your camera should have a firewire socket as well as the USB, so you'll need a firewire cable (which should have been with the camera) and a firewire card in your pc. Don't worry if you haven't got one, they're cheap and easy to fit.

If your camcorder is a MiniDV with a built-in still camera, you can only pull down still images through USB. To capture video you will need to use a firewire connection (1394). My understanding is that USB isn't fast enough to pull down video directly to Window Movie Maker, etc. USB 2.0 might be able to handle it.. but I have never seen that. Try firewire or check to see if it is USB 2.0 or something.
