How to get videos from a camcorder onto a computer?

How do I get videos onto a computer with a camcorder that has no USB???????????????????????????

  • It's a Sony Handycam and the copyright date is like, 1996! It has no USB but surely theres a way to get videos off there, right? Please help! I dont want to have to wait to get a newer kind of camcorder!

If this is a digital camcorder (mini-DV or Digital8), it probably has a Firewire port... Sony would call it an i.Link port. You didn't specify the model, so it's impossible to tell for certain. USB is not used for video from tape-based camcorders anyway, they all use Firewire. If your PC doesn't have a Firewire port, you can add one on a PCI card (or PC-Card, if you have a laptop)... follow the link below. They typically start at under $10 these days. If you have an analog camcorder (HI-8 or Video8 would be the only ones from Sony, I think) you don't have any "files" yet, the data on tape is analog. You would need a capture device, something that can take in your analog video and generate digital files. If you have USB 2.0, Firewire, or a free PCI slot, you can get devices that do this starting at around $20.00... not much different than hooking the camcorder to a VCR.

Two main options. One is a video-capture card for your computer. This essentially creates a way for you to plug the camera directly into your computer. The second is an analog-digital converter box such as the ADS Pyro A/V Link. To use this, you'll need a Firewire port (also known as DV, iLink, IEEE1394) on your computer. If you don't have one of those ports, then you'll need a Firewire card. USB is rarely used for video, anyway. Firewire is the way to go.

One way is to get a video card * that has S video in(google it) or RCA in. Make a video tape, and use your RCA and/or S video out to go to the computer. Free video capture software is easy to find too. Froogle for the best prices on these cards, . I F , you have a DVD recorder and can play DVDs on the computer, you're in luck! Just make a DVD copy of the vids, and save them as DVDs to the hard drive (* video cards are easy to install, they slide into place.on the board. It will be self explanatory, once you open the computer, and are looking at how the other cards are in their slots)
