What is a good video quality to convert to?

I have recorded video on VHS, what is the best way to convert it to DVD format and restore best quality?

    I just converted my (800+ tapes) VHS and (552 tapes) Beta libraries to DVD. I used a Panasonic tabletop DVD-VHS combo recorder. This was the fastest and easiest way. I was doing with a capture card and my computer but that took a day or more per tape. The editing and rendering times were killing me. The combo recorder did the work in the time it takes to play the tape. May not be a way to improve the quality though. You have to decide. Really there is only so much you can do to fix poor quality VHS recordings without spending millions on state of the art video processing equipment like the big studios use to digitally remaster tapes. If I were you, I would get a table top model with a firewire(i-link) interfaceand a Digital-8 camcorder. That way the camcorder converts the Hi-8 tape to digital and records digitally to DVD. No middle man. Clean and straight forward. The best quality possible.

you will have to spend money. About 200 plus tax up front but you will have the device and software for life. I bought a product by Pinnacle Systems called "Moviebox Deluxe" It hooks up to your computer through USB and your video camera or VCR hooks to the box via RCA plugs. The software captures your video, then you can manipulate and edit the captured digital video and even add effects and fades to the video before you burn it to a DVD. There is a way to clean up some video and Audio and also a way to put a menu on the DVD just like a commercial DVD has.
