What camcorder would you recommend?

What camcorder do you recommend I should buy for going on a trip to Egypt?

  • I have been looking at the Flip Ultra HD and Mino HD and both of them have unwanted features. I was also looking at the Sony Bloggie, or Kodak Playsport. Price isn't too big of a deal, as long as it is a small easy to use camcorder with at least a small optical zoom, and good audio. I want to be able to have a good battery life and an even better memory slot. I will be in Egypt for 10 days and will not be able to empty my memory cards until i get home. I will probably be buying three memory cards. Video quality will be a plus and image stabilization will be helpful. Also, it may be helpful to know that i also have a Nikon CoolPix P100 that will take care of all photos, so i am not specifically looking for a camcorder that can take stills. Thanks!

I recommend the Kodak Zi3. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00403MGKK?ie=UTF8&tag=digitsy-post3-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00403MGKK It is a very practical camera. You can take it anywhere with you. You dont have to worry about your camera getting broken because of its rugged desin. It is extremly easy to use. It close to 1080 p, offers larger memory for recording, and offers a 4x optical zoom. It takes great pictures up to 5MP. It is waterproof camera - important for Egypt. You can dive with it up to 10 feet undewater.

I would stay with Kodak, Sony, Nikon or Canon. Those companies are IN digital photo camera's. Get one where you can easily recharge batteries. Some camera's can support a 12V car cigarette lighter plug, which could be beneficial in case you're in an area without power (outside of the cities).

Canon Ah x1s is a bit big for taking into islamo-fascist territory, I know, Ive lugged it around and this is not a handycam, you will need a shoulder brace with this monster. If this were central/northern Europe then the canon ahx1s would be great, but we are talking about people that will try to kill you....JVC GY-HM100 is much smaller, also a 3CCD unit and records to cards. The canon does have a major PRO in that it uses miniDV tapes, which are pretty common anywhere these days in case you run out, and the manufacturing facilities needed are expensive so your getting authentic hardware. SD cards are common too, but manufacturing is a lot cheaper than tape and thus knockoffs, especially in a place like egypt...

For me this would be a trip of a lifetime with little chance to return. Getting good video would be a top priority for me. Taking this into account, if I were going, I would do one of the following: Buy a true, pro HD MiniDv camcorder like the Canon XH-A1h ($4000) or better. Buy a used camera similar to the above with the plan to sell it after the trip. Rent a similar or better camera for the 2 weeks. (Get insurance too) I would not use a so called HD h.264 compression consumer crap-corder for anything more important than youtube posts. A true, uncompressed HD, high quality, big-boys camera will give a record of your trip that will knock your socks off, and your friends/family will actually enjoy watching!
