What is the best external microphone to buy first for a Canon HF S21 Camcorder?

  • I'm interested in Rode mics, but I'm not sure if a shotgun, condenser, or other type would be the most useful. Eventually, I would buy a second type of mic, but this one needs to last for awhile.

    the type is dependent more on what kind of audio you need. my external as an AT stereo condensor which is moderately directional. for picking up dialog at the camera position, a shotgun would be the weapon of choice. for handheld use, the dynamic cardioid is best. most likely i suspect you will chose a condensor. that being the case, you need to know that such mics require DC voltage to operate. don't get one with an XLR connector or one that requires phantom power, that won't work for you. get one that uses an internal AA battery.
