What camcorder should I get?

  • I am saving my money I earn this summer to get a half decent camcorder, something along the lines of a Canon VIXIA or something of the like. My problem is that I am getting mixed reviews. I am not sure with VIXIA to get: the HF100 or HF200 (this is about the price range I am going for, cheaper if possible). Then others suggested the SANYO HD2000, a Sony HandyCam HDR-CX7, etc. I am looking for something I can use for my Film and Vieo class that is starting this fall. I would prefer to have my own camcorder and do little films and take videos of my friends, sports, and family things. But I want something with good quality. I am now using a Fujifilm S700 CAMERA, not camcorder for my videos at the moment, and I just hate the quality (I know, it's not an actual camcorder, it's just the only thing I can use at the moment since I just started working a few weeks ago). Anything that is a step up from that is good for me. I just don't know which one would be best for my money. I love the quality for the HF100 from videos I've seen on YouTube, and Canons seem to have good quality for everything they have, so I am leaning toward the HF100 or the HF200. Remember, I just want it for a Film and Video class and some sporting events, so my main focus is the quality, and I like how the Canon VIXIAs have the 24p movie option.

  • Answer:

24p is rather overrated (IMHO, of course) and it wouldn't be high on my list of desirable features. The camcorders you've mentioned all record to flash memory in a very highly compressed format not well suited to rapid movement (as in sports) and not well suited to editing. Canon have recently introduced the HV40, so you should be able to get a good price on the HV30. I'd explain why that's a good choice, but my dinner's ready :-)

the JVC Everio camcorder is an excellant camcorder that takes very good, high-quality videos. Plus it's picture mode is amazing. I use it all the time for photo shoots. Especially at my brothers hockey and soccer games, it captures action shots GREAT! All you do is take maybe and hour and a half to charge it by plugging the AC cable in the wall to the back of the camcorder. And to upload, you have a USB cable which connects to your computer, to the front of the camcorder and pictures download quickly. For videos, it comes with a fantastic free program called PowerDirector which is simular to Windows Movie Maker but has a lot more effects which can be added! You must upload your video to this program anyway if your would like to upload it onto a site (e.g. Youtube, Facebook) to turn it into a MPEG file. Check out Future Shop or Best Buy for your best deal. Both stores should have the camcorder included with a battery, an AC cable, an AV cable, USB cable, a shoulder strap, Remote Control and all software devices included. Check it out!
