Difference between a camera and camcorder?

What is the difference between a camcorder and a video camera?

  • Somebody please tell me what is the difference, and also im going to start making short films and want a really high quality camera, (whichever has better quality and that out of camcorder and video camera) what do you peoplez suggest? I'm willing to spend 1000 AUD Thanks!

    a video camera does not have an internal recorder. the main use of video cameras is in a television studio where the output goes to a vision mixer board and then recorded (or sent live to on-air picture). back in the day before camcorders, a portable video camera was cable connected to a portable VHS (or Beta) recorder. I still have a video camera, Panasonic WV F250 and it is cable connected to a Sony DVcam digital recorder. In the past it was used with analog recorders, so the big plus with video cameras was they could adapt to new recording media, where as camcorders are stuck with just one media. for 1000 AUD you only choice is a camcorder. if you can find an HDV unit for that price that would be your best option. perhaps you meant a digital camera when you said video camera. those too can shoot video, but they are awkward to hold and operate live. a dSLR requires a lock down tripod to get video that doesn't shake. depending on the subjects of your short films that might be satisfactory.

I would call a DSLR a video camera, I would call it a camera, because it looks like a camera, not a camcorder. Its primary function is to shoot pictures first, video second. Use your search engine to search for pictures of both and will see the difference
