Should I completely drain my camcorder battery before I charge?

  • I have a pretty big Sony battery for my VX1000 camcorder and heard that it's better to drain the whole battery rather than just charge it right away. Is this true? I heard if you just constantly charge it, and not drain it, the battery will loose a lot of life faster.

If its a NiCad, then you have to drain it all the way. True, if you only charge it with half of it empty it won't get the full charge. Reason of discharging it all the way is to erase the memory of the battery so that it can get a full charge, use the full capacity of the battery.

the battery actually should get better life, but what can damage the battery life (sometimes) would be to leave it charging even when it is done. the newer, smarter and generally more expensive battery can tell when it is done charging and stop doing so automatically to prevent damage. when you get a battery, sometimes the package will tell you how many times you can recharge it.
