Camera creates .AVI files. All caps. Unreadable by most video editing software. Help?

  • My camera, a Canon PowerShot S5IS, creates some pretty darn good footage when it films video. However, it makes .AVI files (yes, all caps), as opposed to .mov, .mp4 or .avi files. This file, although very crisp and high definition when viewed properly, is foreign to every video editing software I've tried (Sony Vegas, Adobe After Effects, etc.). The only solution I know is to convert it into an .mp4, but that lowers the quality of the video substantially. Does anyone know what an .AVI file is, and how I can convert it to a standard movie file without reducing the quality by much?

It shouldn't matter if it's upper case or lower. It's AVI (uncompressed) video. You'll need to convert it and add compression at some point or it'll stay a huge file. Did you try changing the extension to lower case? Right click and use Open With.. and select Vegas. If you have a converter, can you convert to .avi?

An Avi File IS NOT a video file, its a container, that holds the video, depending on the codec used to create the video. and yes the video is compressed, uncompressed video runs at about 130gb (not a typing error) per 90 minutes. This will tell you what a AVI is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Video_Interleave go here and dl a little utility to tell you what codec has been used. http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/codec-video-identifiers you should be able to install the correct codec and then allow your editing software to edit it. conversion should always be the last option, the more you convert the video the more the quality reduces.
