How do you transfer an 8mm tape to DVD?

Converting 8mm cassette to DVD - I want high quality but 2 hours minimum on a 4.7 gig DVD.?

  • I have an 8mm cassette recorder/player and several hours of film and some of these have already been transferred to VHS. I'm wanting to transfer these tapes to DVD. These are 2 minute to 30 minute family movies so retaining quality is a must. Most movies are of the kids when they were little, now they are in college. When I transfer the movies with my level of knowledge, 15 minutes is HUGE and can't fit on the disc. I'm not that concerned about the format. Yes, I'd like them (prefer them) to be played on a standard DVD player, however as long as someone can pop it into a computer and play it with virtually any software, I can live with that. I have Pinnacle, the software and transfer device. I no longer have Ulead, my trial expired before I got a chance to really use it for this project. I will be editing so it doesn't have frames from the clip before it or after it on the tape. Also editing will include some text dialog at the bottom with commentary, dates, names. This we do know how to do, pretty basic part of any movie software I've used. I'm a graphics designer. I'm a little out of my element when it gets beyond a gif image. I'll be honest. So my questions are: 1. What program should I use? Is there a free version/trial since money is an issue today? 2. Does anyone know how to do it in Pinnacle? 3. How do I retain quality but a low file size? 4. What format do I use? (AVI, MPEG...) 5. Are there any tutorials for this program online anywhere? 6. Can I contact you further if I have more questions?

    To play on a DVD they need to be in the .VOB object format e.g. Video TS and Audio TS folders. You can do this in pinnacle with ease. I recommend the MPEG format. Another option is to use a service like StashSpace.Com and have them burn the DVDs for you. For $99.95 they will convert all your 8mm tapes.
