Camcorders with good quality pictures?

I recently purchased a Sony DCR-SR45 and found that the overall picture quality isn't very good. I was using a Sony Cyber-Shot before, and it broke, but it took better quality videos and pictures both as opposed to this camcorder. What would you recommend as an HDD camcorder with good picture quality and that's not too expensive? [not too expensive being anywhere from $300-$500]
