How do i import videos from my Sony Handycam?

Why can't I import my Sony Handycam Videos and pictures onto Windows Movie Maker?

  • Me and my friend do vids all the time and i cant do them with my video camera. We always do them with hers. And for example i want to put these videos on youtube. And they are all together and i cant cut them up on Movie Maker. Do i need to download somthing or is it just not compatible? Which cameras could i get that are compatible? thank you for your help.

    All DV tape based camcorders (miniDV, HDV, and Digital8) are directly compatible with Windows Movie Maker. The HDV camcorder requires a change in the play/VCR menu to export the video in SD in order to be captured in WMM. All other camcorders can not work directly with WMM. This includes older analog camcorders and the newer tapeless formats. Those formats require some kind of format conversion to AVI or WMV in order to be used in WMM. * If trying to capture standard 8mm or Hi-8 cassettes, use a digital8 camcorder instead. Purchase a camcorder that records to miniDV, HDV, or digital8 tape. This can cost anywhere from a $150-$1,000 or more. 2. Purchase and upgraded video editing program such as Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum ($75) or Pinnacle Studio Plus($99). Both can import and edit the newer AVCHD a well as other new video formats.

I don't understand why you can't cut them up on Moviemaker. Even if it is one continuous file, you should be able to run it in preview, and cut it where you want to start, cut again where you want to finish, and drag the piece into the storyboard for titling, etc. Even if the vid was loaded via composite video input rather than firewire, you should be able to edit. When running the vid in, do you check the "cut into clips when finished" box?
