How do I transfer Mini DV tape onto a disc?

How to transfer footage from Mini DV Tape to Mac Through Canon Vixia HV40?

  • I'm trying to transfer video from my Canon Vixia HV40 to my Mac Book Pro. I've been able to transfer it easily before on other cameras but for some reason it isn't working for this camera. I am using Final Cut Pro as the editing software and I am filming in HD. Is there another wire that I need to get? If so can someone please show me which wire it is that I need to get to be able to transfer this? I really don't know where to go from here. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Minidv camcorders require a firewire connection. Your mac book needs a firewire card. Your camcorder will be 4pin if your mac has firewire it is probably 4 pin, but could be 6 pin. You will open your editing software and CAPTURE the video. Make sure your camcorder is in playback/review mode.

I have a Sony HDVcam like your Canon HV40. I can read HD tape or normal DV tape. Then I use a firewire cable to run into my mac book pro's firewire port. Then I open iMovie, it captures. The firewire is from iLink (small one) to the firewire port on your MBP. Some MBP have older generation port, some have different kind. It all depends on which model you have.
