What is the less expensive but good video recording camera?

What is a good digital video camera for recording loud live music?

  • I currently have a Sony Mini DV camera that shoots good enough video when shooting my band, but the sound sucks. My Sony point & shoot digital camera sounds better. I want a small camera with a good size hard drive that records really good sound for loud live rock & roll. Any ideas?

Hi Timpala, The best option,in my opinion, would be a camcorder with a external microphone. I understand that's not ideal at concerts. So,maybe these links are helpfull for you : http://wize.com/digital-camcorders/t50422-sound-quality Searching the net, I stumbled upon this again and again. It's a unknown brand to me but it seems to have good sound quality (mind it has a resolution of only 640x480) : http://www.minicamcordersblog.com/mini-camcorders/samson-zoom-q3-mini-camcorder-with-superb-audio Greetings, Lance.

The 6 Megapixel Nikon D40 is targeted for those who want a relatively compact and light camera yet having most of the important SLR features. The D40 is priced reasonably (cheaper than D50/D80 and Canon Rebel XTi). In my opinion, if you are still considering whether to get a point and shoot camera or a DSLR, the D40 will be a better choice than any point and shoot camera, by far, even those with 8MP or 10MP. But if you are already deciding to get a DSLR or you want more control of the picture taking experience, then I would recommend you to also test the D50 and/or D80 first before deciding to buy the D40.

It's more a setting thing than the DV camera itself - more or less consumer cameras have the same built-in quality microphone. The sound depends where they place the microphone (in front? some strange places on the camera?). Try NOT to cover the built-in mic, or put your finger anywhere near. Otherwise there will be handling noise. I shoot a loud music performance once with my Sony HDV (tape, pro-sumer), it was ok - link below if you wanna check out. The key things for shopping: buy one with SD card, more stable. Aim for main brands, Sony Canon Panasonic.
