What's a good helmet cam?

Jvc GZ-MG360 A/V input and recording. use with a RCA aka A/V helmet cam. also the GZ-MG365 model.?

  • i am considering buying the JVC GZ-MG360 or JVC GZ-MG365 camcorder. for a few reasons but mainly the ability for A/V input recording. just wanted to double check with anyone that has one of these camcorders to make sure i understand the the camcorder can record A/V input from say a helmet cam, TV, ot VCR. given i have the correct cables to do so. another thing. say i had a helmet cam hooked to my camcorder if i was to put my camcorder in record mode would it keep recording if i put the lcd screen back into its protective / closed position.

  • Answer:

According to the JVC site http://camcorder.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028337&pathId=119&page=14 The 360 does not do AV-in; get its manual here: http://books.jvcservice.com/booklist.asp?Model=GZ-MG360 The 365 does have AV-in, get its manual here: http://books.jvcservice.com/booklist.asp?Model=GZ-MG365BUS You probably should confirm with JVC and the helment cam manufacturer that a helmet cam will operate properly. When you start recording, you need to open the LCD panel... doing start/stop/start/stop may be problematic. I would suggest using a camcorder that has a LANC (wired remote) for start/stop. Also, hard drive based camcorders are not good for use in high vibration/loud noise (bands, motors, etc) environments because the HDD heads will park in an effort to protect itself and nothing will be recorded. As well, HDD camcorders don't like high altitude. Flash memory and miniDV tape based camcorders do not suffer from these issues. The Sony DCR-HC96 was the last decent camcorder with AV-in that most of the helment cam manufacturers recommended - there are others... but not normally HDD based because of the typical nature of the use of helment cams (lots of action = drop sensor or vibration isuues).
