What is the best software to get to edit AVCHD video?

  For basic AVCHD editing, I can easily recommend Sony's own Vegas Movie Studio Platnium. This is a scaled version of the full Vegas editor that I use... it's easy but very powerful. And if you need more, you can upgrade to Vegas Pro at a discount. Anyway, this runs around $115 direct, and you can find it in stores perhaps for less. Follow the link -- you can run a free trial to see if you like it. This also includes DVD Architect Studio, which lets you author your own DVDs. You need the full Vegas Pro to do Blu-Ray discs (and full support for that is coming Real Soon Now). I've used most of the video editing tools around, and I find Vegas the best, at least to my way of thinking. You should try before you buy, regardless of the program... I wasted about $450 on a different editor, years ago, which proved to be all but unusable (very, very buggy... it was a high-end ULead program). And some just clash with your way of thinking. I mostly edit HDV, but I recently bought a pocket digital still camera that does AVCHD at 720p, and Vegas worked just dandy with it. That IS a concern, because AVCHD is such a new format, not all editors are yet reading every version of AVCHD. Sony promises Vegas will work with all Sony AVCHD cameras. Give it a year, and the compatibility issues should vanish.
