What are the best ways to transfer Digital 8 Video to DVD?
-
First, Thank Motionpicturecentral.com for answering my questions and many others' related to camera, video..Your answers really help us.Thanks!Currently, I'm trying to transfer videos from my SONY digital 8 to DVD.A while ago, i tried with several types of Video Tuner card and USB DVD recorder(from Frys' electronics),but the pictures at best came w/ great lost of quality, so i thought i would give up on these tuner cards & find some other way. Just now, I've been able to make DVD w/ the SAME quality from the camcorder's video by using a DVD-R/RW recorder w/ various recording speed (slower=better quality) but now i have to rip the DVD into my computer so that i can edit and then burn out an edited version. I have not succeeded thru all of this multi-step process which would certainly take a lot of time.So I'm asking if anyone knows some better/best ways to get the video out of my camera (in editable format) with minimal lost of quality.eg: has any1 tried DVD recorders with hard drive?

Answer:
Using any analog transfer mechanism, even to the DVD recorder, you are going to lose some video quality... it's guaranteed, it's just a matter of "how much". What you really want with Digital8 is a direct digital transfer to your computer. As far as I know, all Digital8 camcorders have a Firewire port... that's what you want to use (a few dedicated DVD recorders also have Firewire ports, and may do a nice job with this transfer too, as long as you keep the quality setting high). Firewire is a direct digital transfer... what you "capture" is exactly what's on the tape, bit for bit. In software, Digital8 is indistinguishable for DV or miniDV, so anything that's designed to work with those, for editing or capture, will work with your Digital8 camcorder -- assuming it's got a Firewire port, anyway. Sony calls this "i.Link", and my old Digital8 camcorder has one of these, it works great. Most newer desktops, and all but the cheapest laptops, have at least one Firewire port built-in. If you don't have one, they're easy enough to add via PCI -- here's an example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815265003 They're selling the card, a cable, and basic video editing software for Windows for under $16.
