New video Camera editing help?

Flip video camera .. editing ? help .?

  • Kaaysoo , i imported my videos from my flip camera onto my computer . i have the windows movie maker but it wont let me import them on there . so how do i edit the videos?

  • Answer:

Hi Adreanna: Your file-import problem is due to what file types or "codecs" that WMM can accept (versus the codec that Flip uses to compress the video & audio to save space). Here's how the Cisco/Flip website describes the Top Three Reasons people have trouble with their Flip video files: http://www6.nohold.net/CiscoFlip/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=bcf5167e08ff4ad4aa8702ba9d8a0168_Top_5_reason_why_your_Flip_videos_are_not_playing_on_your_co.xml Have you tried editing your Flip videos with the FlipShare software? Here's a HowTo Guide from Cisco/Flip: http://www6.nohold.net/CiscoFlip/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=d0300ea4766f48dd8c6270cf2f9cc5d6_KB20621_EN_v1.xml Here's the Cisco/Flip Guide for properly "exporting" your video files from FlipShare so other programs like WMM can play or edit them: http://www6.nohold.net/CiscoFlip/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=b01f3486be8643768f37dc409b365ce5_KB20622_EN_v1.xml If you do a Yahoo!Search or Google "mp4 transcoders", you'll see a wide selection of downloads that will convert or "transcode" your Flip videos into a WMM compatible format. The Prism transcoder from NCH Software in Australia (free for 14-days; $50-$80 USD for a full version) is recommended by some other Y!A Top Contributors as a good under-$100 file converter. But for that kind of money, I'd rather go with Adobe Premiere Elements ($99 list; currently $59 online after $40 instant-rebate/coupon) and have a decent major-brand editing software package. Like any reputable software package, there's a free trial option available on Adobe's website, to make sure it's the right solution for you before you spend any money. Be wary of some "spam posts" here on Y!A that offer a "free" step-by-step link (usually to a pay-for-download file converter). One such post was already deleted here by the Y!A Team, and I see a new spammer has posted another. I'll try to post an Update with some safe & actually free transcoder packages available online (although the free/shareware ones usually yield poor-quality video). I know my iBeat Emo video player came with a disk for file-conversion, but I don't think Flip has any. I know some of the FlipShare software is built-in to the camera's firmware when you plug the unit into your USB port, and that Cisco now has FlipShare Updates for "Release v5.10" (some people are still running version 2 or 3). UPDATE Edit: The popular "Handbrake" free video converter that Mac users have raved about is now available for Windows: download it @ http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php Streamclip for Windows (by Squared5's Stefano Cinque) is a free converter/editor recommended by others: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html . Be sure to read ALL the Quicktime requirements if you choose to try Streamclip. hope this helps, --Dennis C.
