How to transfer old video tapes on to DVD's?

Convert 8mm tapes to Digital video. What do I need?

  • I have a Sony CCD-TRV14E Camcorder and I want to burn the videos onto DVDs. I'm unsure about what I need to buy to convert the (8mm) tapes, I was looking at some stuff from pinnacle but I'm unsure which one I need (Dazzle DVD Recorder, Pinnacle Studio MovieBox, Pinnacle Video Transfer) I'm really confused as to which I need.

  • Answer:

You’ll need the proper cables to connect the Sony camera to your computer. Your camera may have an A/V Output (looks similar to an earphone port) or it may have RCA jacks Outputs or it may have Sony’s own special port. You can use your computer’s USB port but you’ll need a converter cable. Most common is RCA to USB. There are many available on-line. Be aware that most will only convert the analog to digital using their own program. One work-around to that is to buy a higher priced converter that is supported by other video editing software. Like my Canopus 77010150100 ADVC110 Converter is supported by my Adobe Premiere Pro. Be sure to read the reviews on whichever converter cable you decide on. Some people have problems getting them to work properly. BTW: Windows XP Media Edition will not work on many, if not all converter cables. This link is just one example of what you'll need. There are probably better ones.
