How good is the flip video camera's battery life?

  It depends on what your definition of good or bad is. The manufacturer's web site has what you want: http://www.theflip.com/products_flip_ultra_specs.II.shtml Scroll down to "Battery life" and just to make it easy, understand that when is says "up to ____ hours" that means the batteries will not typically last that long... so subtract 15-30 minutes off that. Of course, you can just carry extra batteries... Personally, I would not recommend this product, but your definition of "video quality" may be very different than mine. Also, it depends what you plan to video... if you have any plan to tape bands or other loud noises, the audio will get thrashed (lots of "clipping" and sound really muddy). If you don't expect good audio and just want a toy to play with, I guess this would be OK - but why not just get a cell-phone with video recording capabilities...
