What digital camcorder has good low-light performance?

What Camcorder should I buy?

  • Hi. I'm looking for a Camcorder in the Top-End of the consumer camcorder range. I have between 700 and 1100 pounds. Which camcorder is the best in terms of money and performance? I have been recommended the Canon Legria HF G10 and the Panasonic HDC-HS900. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    The panasonic is an excellent little cam, A production company i worked for used it as a back up - great quality and small (if thats a plus for you), If you re planning to use it professionally you need something that looks the part...but then you're into the £1500 second hand market... As a camerman myself, with that sort of budget for domestic use but still with excellent quality I would go with the pannasonic, Or HDSLR's but they re a bit of a different ball game.

I agree with the other poster that the HS900 is a superb camera, considering its price. It has a smaller image sensor than a professional model, which makes it more affordable but also reduces its low-light capability - however, in ordinary lighting conditions, it's a superb bit of kit. It shoots in native 1080p, 50fps (60fps in NTSC-land), which is more than a lot of professional models can do, and has a good level of manual control over video and audio. It's a bit fiddly due to camera size, but you can manually control the focus, shutter speed, iris (aperture) and gain (ISO), and also has a pretty reliable "intelligent auto" feature to fall back on. Plus, you can plug in an external microphone.
