What is a good but affordable video camera better to buy?

What would be a good video camera to buy in order to film my pitching mechanics?

  • I want to buy a good video camera to film my pitching mechanics but I don't want to have to spend too much money. The frame rate has to be good so that it gives a smooth and clear video so that I can see the details of my pitching motion. Any ideas?

I have no idea how much you want to spend, but this sounds EXACTLY like the kind of thing the Exilim EX-F1 is meant for. It is a hybrid digital camera/camcorder. It can shoot super slow mo video for a few seconds, perfect for analyzing motion like pitches. It's almost $1,000, though. When your done analyzing pitches you can go take photographs of games with this too, so it's perhaps worth it. If that's too expensive, then you should go with the cheapest progressive camcorder you can find. Progressive looks better than interlaced in slow-mo. If you want HD, look for 720p or 1080p, not 720i or 1080i. The p stands for progressive, the i for interlaced. Google "cheap progressive camcorder" or something. BTW: if you already have a point-and-shoot camera, look through the manual and see if it has movie mode. Most point and shoot cameras I know shoot movies progressive, so you may be able to use that and not have to buy anything else.

I think the Sony HDR-HC9 would be a good choice. It will provide slow motion for you.

The Casio Exilim EX-F1 may be good if you want to only have photos, but you probably want to have full video too. You will want to start with a camcorder capable of taking progressive video on miniDV. This allows perfect clean still frames. Preferably you would want an HD camera capable of high progressive frame rates, but most of these are professional cameras in th $2,500-$5,000 range. If you are not wiling to pay the money, you will need to use SD resolution instead. A camcorder with super slow motion capabilities may do the trick. The key to all this is that you need a higher level video editing program than the free Windows Movie Maker or iMovie that came with your computer. The higher level program will have the capability to speed up and slow down your videos to the exact speed you want. You will need Final Cut Express http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Z3DXT2?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000Z3DXT2 for a Mac. Adobe Premiere CS3 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OGSGZQ?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000OGSGZQ is available for both Windows and Mac. Both of these editing programs will be well worth the cost. You might be fine with the camcorder you already own if it can record progressive video and the software can adjust the video speed and frame rate to the speed you need from the original speed of your camcorder. It all depends on what exactly you need to see or show in your pitching. If you still want to get a better camcorder, you need to add the price of the editing program on top of the price of camera. Since must have the software even if you purchase a camera, try purchasing the video editing software first. Record your video in the fastest progressive speed your camcorder can perform (normally 30p). Then you can slow down the video in the editing software. A common speed here would be 24p but you can make the software play the video frames slower. If this works, then you don't need to spend more money. If it does not improve your video enough, then you will need a camcorder capable of recording 60p frames or more (and be ready to spend a lot of money). Talk to your local videographer and wedding video providers. One of them might have a professional video camera like ours that includes slow motion capabilities. Most of them will also have Final Cut, Adobe Premiere, or another similar video editing program. They can test and show your the variable frame rate capabilities. If you already have the videos you want to analyze, they might also use them to create the new videos in adjusted frame rates at an affordable price.
