Why won't my camcorder work on my computer?

When I try to use my camcorder as a digital pass-through from my VCR to my computer, why doesn't it work?

  • I thought I have always understood how this is supposed to work. I'm trying to transfer tons of home videos from old VCR tapes onto my computer, so I've got my VCR hooked up to my digital camcorder with an S-Video cable and the appropriate RCA cables. I've double-checked all the settings on my camcorder for the video AND audio signals to pass through to my computer, etc. etc. but all I'm getting is sound. I'm getting no picture signal at all. it worked fine all the other times when I was transferring video from an analog camcorder through my digital camcorder onto my computer, but it's not working when I use a VCR. what the hell am I doing wrong??

  • Answer:

I'd expect the S-Video connection on a camcorder to be an output rather than an input- is that what you used with your analog camcorder? Is there a setting on the VCR to use S-Video rather than SCART or composite? Is composite an option rather than S-Video? <edit> OK, the TRV350's S-Video is bi-directional, so there's no reason why yours can't be.

Difficult to tell since you did not tell us which camcorder you are using, but if you are using a miniDV tape based camcorder, they need to connect using firewire (also known as i.LINK or IEEE1394a or DV)... USB won't work... Since you are getting audio, I presume some sort of pass-through is happening - most consumder camcorders don't even have the AV pass-through or AV-in feature...
