What cables do I need for my camcorder?

I need a cable to transfer video from my Sony DCR-TRV103 onto my computer?

  • I have an older camcorder, a Sony DCR-TRV103 (made in 1999 I believe) and I need a cable to transfer the footage from the Hi 8mm tapes to my computer. I am leaning towards getting a firewire cable but to my knowledge, I don't have a firewire port on my computer and I don't even know if my camcorder has the ability to be transfered onto my computer. My question here is, can I transfer tapes from my camcorder onto my computer? If so, what cables/ports will I need? Links to these items will help :P Thanks guys (P.S. I believe the pin on the camcorder is a 4 pin, but I'm not entirely certain)

  • Answer:

this camera is a "plug equivalent" of a miniDV type. it does not play analog video recorded on Hi8 or Video8 tapes. It records and playsback digital only, just like miniDV. so the first order of business is for you to determine if the DCR-TRV103 can playback your tape collection, put in a tape and see if you get a normal visual image on playback through the viewfinder. having passed that test, then you need to get a generic firewire/iLink/ieee1394 cable. you might wait until you get the ieee1394 card for the computer so you will know what connector it will need. the most common combination is 4 pin at the camera and 6 pin at the computer, but there are variations.
